Very interesting TED Talk, Sepehr. I like the direction you took your topic on cloning. When I think of cloning, I imagine human cloning to create perfect beings for our own benefit. But thanks to your presentation, I now realize that cloning can be used to help 3rd world countries living in poverty by cloning cattle and other livestock, such that it is now beneficial to others as well.

When you say cloning copies the organism, but ends up degrading the original leaving it with less molecules to work with, wouldn’t that mean that nutrients are being lost in the process? So essentially, there would be food, but it would be lacking in nutrients that the people living in poverty so desperately need, no? That, combined with the ethical issues that come with it, and the wasted money from the ridiculously low success rates lead me to disagree with your final opinion that cloning is absolutely necessary.

Although cloning is one way that we could provide food for those in poverty, I’m still wondering if there aren’t better ways of feeding people.

For example, you could use plants to feed people. A cloned animal still needs to grow, and to keep it alive, you need to feed it plants; most likely more plants than the entire animal will weigh! Also, it’s a lot easier, and much more natural to grow plants, as opposed to cloning animals. Cloning animals takes a much more controlled environment, as opposed to a plant. Also, you need to grow plants anyway, so that you could feed the cloned animal. Plus, some plants, like beans, are relatively high in protein, and could be used as a substitute.

Although I disagree with cloning being the best way to feed hungry people, I do like your Ted Talk quite a bit. There was generally a good pace, except for the short gaps during transitions, and I liked how you added personal experience into your Ted Talk. All in all, you had a pretty epic Ted Talk!

I agree with Albert in that there are so many ethical issues, people opposed to cloning, and the low success rate. Yes, it is a way to help, but will it really help all that much? For what it’s worth, I’m sure we could find another way that would help in a much more substantial way, without all the protests, wasted money, and the fact that it doesn’t help the people as much as something else could. It would be nice to be able to give extra livestock to the people who need it most, but this method seems rather inefficient.
